5 Gotchas of IT

The privelidge of being in tech means that I get to know about the “gotchas” before everyone else. Here’s a few that keep our services fast and reliable for those we support:

  • Take DNS backups before transferring domains – if you don’t do this, you lose critical information about your email/web/marketing/telephony services which will cause downtime for you.
  • Delegate mailboxes without auto-mapping – by default, when you delegate someone access to someone else’s email (or a shared mailbox) it will auto-invite itself into their Outlook but the end user might not want it there all the time!
  • When setting up a Windows computer, the first step matters – DO NOT sign in with an @outlook.com, @hotmail.co.uk account etc. There are hidden tips and tricks to instead create a local account first and then you can add your Microsoft accounts later in a much more controllable manner without locking yourself out accidentally.
  • Keep an eye out for “Windows 11” (Home) vs “Windows 11 Pro” – without Pro, you’re buying a computer with reduced security, performance and features.
  • Time & Region settings – who cares if your computer’s time is out by 40 seconds? We do! It means that your Multi-Factor One-Time Passcodes will stop working most of the time and potentially lock you out…

So there you are! A short list of just a few things that only a techie would know which can save headaches, save time and save money.
